Some things really get IT folks riled up. One of them is a recent article in Wiredclaiming that coding is the next big blue collar job. While it sounds like a sign of hope and opportunity, it’s created a backlash amongst IT professionals — one that uncovers the “belly of the beast.” As an industry insider, I’ve heard this blue collar job idea unleash fears, assumptions and what sounds like territorial sandbox whining amongst software developers, as in “Here comes more crappy code” or “These guys won’t be experienced enough to do what I do.”
To be honest, when I started as a software engineer over 20 years ago, those very same words might have come out of my own mouth. I dislike poorly written code as much as the next gal (or guy) and yes, some roles in software development demand deep experience. But I’ve also come to see a much larger perspective on the future of our global economy, on coding jobs, and the impact on people’s lives. I challenge my fellow developers to let down their defenses for a moment – and follow my logic.First, not just anybody can become a professional developer. Almost every respected bootcamp, including We Can Code IT, has strict entrance criteria and assessments before and during training. It’s how we ensure the integrity of professionals entering our field and those who enter can actually keep up with the pace of the class. On average, only 15% of those who apply to We Can Code IT actually gain entrance into our full-stack program — and not everyone makes it through. To succeed in our fast-paced program, students must have the ability to learn and adapt quickly. They need agile, cooperative attitudes so they can pull for the success of the team. These are qualities we demand from our students — and ones employers are looking for, too.

Given this, and the fact there are plenty of coding to go around (and then some), you’d think our fears of infiltration would be set to rest. But why do we still harbor a sense of protectionism, and yes, dare I say it — arrogance — when it comes to lowering the drawbridge and allowing new faces into the software development kingdom?

CMOs Marketing to Enterprises:

I think of Lexus Davis, a young African-American woman and one of hundreds of unconventional students I’ve seen work their way through our coding bootcamp. Lexus comes from a family with roots in the blue-collar city of Cleveland, the city built on rock & roll and steel plants virtually lining the city’s Cuyahoga River – yes, the same river that caught fire in 1969. Lexus was the first in her family to attend college and certainly the first to enter the tech industry. She was nearing the end of a job with a construction company when she signed on with We Can Code IT’s bootcamp. Even before our accelerated program was over, she proved her value and was hired by JPMorgan Chase as a software developer. The company continues to mentor her through their two-year Technology Analyst Program.So my question is this: why can’t these non-traditional but well-trained coders also build a career, give back to the world and provide for their families? Why can’t their different perspectives and experiences give them unique skills and approaches that might actually address gaps in solving problems from a perspective that we aren’t even aware of? Their previous life experience adds balance to an industry often lopsided with traditional programmers who tend to come from relatively homogenous backgrounds. Why can’t these other folks succeed too, and even thrive, though they traveled a different path in life and in education?I see this happen on a daily basis in our coding bootcamp in Cleveland, one of America’s great comeback cities with a “rust belt” blue-collar history. I’ve discovered that it’s a faulty (and somewhat arrogant) leap to say a coder will write crappy programs simply because they’re a “bent arrow” who followed a different path in life. I’ve found it’s never too late to learn – and that people with different experiences bring different gifts to the party. And want to compare depth of skills? Well, that’s where the rest of us step up to the plate and serve. If we close the door to new faces – our industry will implode. If we cling to our “we got here first” and “no one can do it better” attitudes, over one million tech jobs in the U.S. will go unfilled. If we want a strong IT industry where “clean code” reigns — we need to embrace newcomers and share our expertise by mentoring.

We can’t afford to exclude new faces in IT. Instead, we need to answer the call to be leaders in a society that’s competing in a world economy. I hereby challenge my fellow developers to become role models, advocates and mentors to a new generation of coders. They need your encouragement, not your arrogance. You’re better than that. So make a difference in someone’s career and in someone’s life. Encourage, welcome and mentor a new generation of hard-working coders who write clean code and deserve a decent paycheck.

The aerospace sector has seen its fair share of pitfalls. Fluctuating Oil Prices

Naturally, oil is integral with everything in the aerospace sector. When oil prices lower or rise, everything in the sector changes to fit the price. In 2016, suppliers kept oil prices at a low level that made airlines more profitable. With the profits came concern that customers wouldn’t want to seek newer aircraft in the face of such low prices for the ones they already had.

While people are still eager for new aircraft, which we’ll get in a moment, the fact that oil prices lowered created a cascading effect. There were profits, but also some concern for the future. Keeping an eye on all these different portions of the aerospace sector is crucial when estimating the trends as a whole.

Advancements in Technology

Better technology and knowledge of aircraft have led to more comfortable rides. Less noise in cabins and better interior designs have driven consumer demand to travel more by air. All these elements are also changing the way aircraft manufacturers work, creating new challenges in supply while still turning a profit with customer support.

Even the way maintenance takes place has changed to suit newer technology. There are a lot of different tests to undergo and systems to check on, all of which takes time and money to ensure they take place safely and correctly. All the preventive efforts in place also contribute to trends in the industry by spending more money, but also increasing safety and profits from consumers.

Demands for Replacements

One trend has remained consistent for the last several years: a demand for new aircraft. These next-generation planes will be more fuel- and energy-efficient and save many airlines a lot of money. With oil going up since the lower prices of 2016, airlines have halted a lot of upgrades to their current fleets because they’re waiting for new aircraft.

This trend has a lot of elements at play. First, current aircraft aren’t seeing updates, which could cause a downward swing in consumer flying and safety in the coming years. Second, these next-generation planes aren’t even in use yet, so money in the sector is at a standstill while airlines save up for them. Lastly, once these new planes are in use, prices and demand will likely fluctuate, possibly impacting the oil sector as well.

Supply and Demand

Due to a combination of factors, there has been a growing demand for new planes of the same generation in recent years. Airlines have ordered more than 14,000 planes that are backlogged in delivery, a figure that’s an all-time high. As manufacturers rush to meet these numbers for demand, suppliers quickly face shortages as well. The entire prospect is a vicious cycle that spirals before anyone can rectify the internal issue of waiting for the next-generation planes.

Robin Lineberger, leader of Deloitte’s Aerospace & Defense, suggested manufacturers should focus first on strengthening their supply lines before trying to meet demand. Boeing and Airbus have already found there is a shortage of engines to meet their needs. While Lineberger has sound advice, a lot of the problem comes down to time. Waiting for new planes has caused problems with current ones, resulting in more demand and fewer supplies. These instances drive up demand for the next-generation aircraft, as well, creating a loop.

Trends to Watch

Steady, predictable trends result from material supplies. Aircraft parts and oil are two of the most significant factors to look at when considering trends in the aerospace industry. Another reliable aspect is consumer demand to fly rather than drive. With convenience and lowering airline ticket costs, consumers are garnering more profit for airlines than ever before. Unfortunately, this is where the more predictable factors end.

With airlines waiting for the next generation of aircraft, which will most certainly live up to the hype, they’re updating their planes less frequently. This phenomenon causes the aforementioned cycle we mentioned, raising demand on current aircraft and creating chokeholds in supply chains. While the wait seems to be only getting longer for these new aircraft, the industry should finally start evening out with their implementation, and may even start to boom again for awhile.

For all their disruptive potential — and there’s a lot of it — Industry 4.0, the IoT and smart factories also raise the potential for some very real security concerns.

That’s why this is a good time to discuss how to secure smart factory IoT networks during your company’s digital transformation. Security must be a pillar of each of your digital systems, so here’s what you need to know about security and the smart factory.

What’s a Smart Factory?

Take a step back for a moment and ask — What’s a smart factory in the first place? Broadly, it’s a manufacturing facility which does any of the following:

• Uses cyber-physical systems to monitor machine health proactively and provide actionable data about ongoing operations

• Automates facility or business functions, such as climate control, inventory tagging or reordering

• Makes use of distributed computing and high-speed networks to transmit data between in-house decision makers and across other stakeholders and industry partners

Research from PwC suggests that, through 2020, manufacturers will invest a combined $907 billion annually ,across the globe, to transition to smart infrastructure, against a potential ROI of hundreds of billions of dollars annually in boosted revenues and lower costs.

But we’re not here to discuss the opportunities — we’re here to talk about the security risks. With digital security a mainstream issue of some concern, it’s not hard to imagine why the scope of these digital-physical systems substantially expands a company’s threat surface and opens it to attack from outside — or even inside — parties.

What Threats Do Factories Face?

Not surprisingly, that PwC survey also showed that data breaches and disruptions to normal daily operations are the two highest-ranking security concerns among operations managers.

Let’s unpack these and some of the other major threat types the modern factory may find itself up against:

• Data breaches: Data breaches are inconvenient and costly in more ways than one. In terms of the bottom line, a small business could face an average loss of $120,000 if data thieves target them. Big corporations stand to lose a lot more, but they’re also more likely to have taken measures to protect themselves. Regrettably, it’s small business owners who are often not in an ideal position to defend themselves properly, either because of a lack of capital or because they underestimate the threat.

• DDoS attacks: Dedicated-denial-of-service attacks are the quintessential threat under Industry 4.0. As recent headlines attest, outside parties can turn a swarm of thousands — or even just a handful — of unprotected IoT devices against their master to cripple infrastructure and render their business and its services unreachable. Botnet attacks seem to only grow more sophisticated over time, and the government calls for greater cooperation between the private and public sector in getting the problem under control.

• Ransomware attacks: Other high-profile stories show that something as innocuous as an Internet-connected heating and cooling system could provide a back door into your industrial control systems and your customer databases. A ransomware attack involves a hacker quarantining your mission-critical data until you pay to have access restored.

Each of these threats is worrisome and potentially ruinous for your business. A DDoS attack, for example, could damage an automotive parts company operating on thin margins — one hour of downtime could cost $22,000 or more, with some DDoS attacks lasting for a week. That’s a huge amount of time to leave customers or clients without the products or services they need. Expect to lose business and a lot of money to your competitors if you fall victim to a DDoS attack.

How Can Factories Mitigate Risk?

This probably sounds like scaremongering. The truth is, the benefits of the IoT and smart factories absolutely outweigh the drawbacks — but companies need to know about the threats going in, and they need to have the right talent on their side to help keep them protected.

That’s step one for mitigating risk in smart factories — hire the right people. Let’s unpack this and some other best practices:

• Ramp up IT hiring: Here, again, the small business is at a disadvantage. Companies everywhere look for cybersecurity and data science professionals to build their digital systems and then keep them protected. Until you have the right hires or the right outside partner, don’t try to tackle Industry 4.0 on your own.

• Keep devices and workstations up-to-date: There’s no way to understate the importance of applying security patches and feature updates as soon as they become available. Manufacturers roll these out to keep you safe, so make sure auto-update is turned on for each of your internet-connected assets, or else make sure your maintenance team has a workflow in place to perform the task manually on a regular basis.

• Train for good password and security hygiene: Company culture is vital in keeping our organizations safe. Don’t take it for granted that employees know not to reuse passwords, leave workstations unlocked or not to click on links in suspicious emails. Instead, train on these ideas and then have your IT team run drills to keep people on their toes.

• Think about physical security too: Nobody wants to think about somebody within their organization getting handsy with trade secrets or intellectual property. Physical security in a smart factory includes anything from steel gates and biometric security at sensitive checkpoints to GPS or RFID tracking for assets such as computers, mobiles and server equipment.

There are so many good reasons for companies to make their factories smarter. A lot of the operational data we generate sits in a silo, not doing anybody any good. But smart factories free this data andmake it available across departments and between business partners. Data sharing creates new opportunities and pinpoints areas to eliminate waste — insights that might’ve been hidden from sight before.

The cost of falling victim to cybercrime and other threats seems only to get higher. The good news is, factories and the decision-makers running them have a number of weapons on their side, the most important of which is awareness.
